3 Minute Thread: Alexander Aplerku
"The best life hack I’ve learned is to be honest and kind. My mum taught me that"
I thought I first met Alex when he joined my team at Browns Fashion back in 2019. Turned out, I was wrong. He reminded me we’d already met - at a houseparty hosted by Dazed, when he was DJing in a steamy room filled with pink smoke, wearing a leather waistcoat. How could I forget!
Wherever he goes, Alex is pure positive energy. He’s also the ultimate plug - he knows what’s up years before everyone else, and can smell a bad vibe from a mile away. Fashion-wise, he has the smoothest personal style, as exhibited here:
Who are you?
My name’s Alex, aka. Alexander, aka. Tettey. I’m a creative strategist from London and have been blessed to work with incredible brands like Dazed, The Face, Browns, NTS, and Condé Nast. I’m now at Hearst as a Global Creative Strategist working on their luxury titles. Also I’m a dad of a lovely toddler.
What are you wearing?
I’m wearing a top from Palace, trousers and shoes from Zara. Glasses are from Ace & Tate (no prescription, purely for style).
Why did you choose this outfit?
It makes me feel ready for the day.
Where did you wear it/ where are you planning to wear it?
I’ve always worn it when I want to feel energised. It’s one of my work outfits now.
What’s the best style lesson you’ve learned over the years?
Stay true to yourself. Sometimes you put something on and immediately know it’s a “no”. Style should never feel forced.
One person you think has great style?
I’ve got three: Ben Whishaw, André 3000, and Chloë Sevigny.
Best life hack?
The best life hack I’ve learned is to be honest and kind. My mum taught me that, and it’s priceless.
Your favourite person to follow?
One of my favourite people to follow is @chuckmonsey. He really gets you thinking about the power of curating and archives. I love his approach.
A recommendation to read/ watch/ listen/ see or do?
I’m a bookworm, and I recently finished ‘The Nickel Boys’, such a beautiful story. I’m also reading ‘Invisible Women’, which I think should be required reading for all men. Apart from book recs, I’d also suggest The Traitors (British version), that TV show puts me on edge!! I also love the podcast The Art of Curating, and I’d recommend Judah’s High Hopes show on NTS, as well as the film Anora. Such a beautiful film.
