3 Minute Thread: Ellen Morrison
"I realised I got most excited to get dressed on holiday, because my clothing options were condensed down to my favourite things"
I met Ellen at my friend Bibi’s book club. She had a wise, elegant vibe, and very cool glasses. Ellen also knows lots about art, and recently started writing a newsletter, Two More Things, in which she attends two shows back-to-back and then reviews them.
Who are you?
I’m Ellen. A project manager, art writer and footballer — to varying degrees of professionalism.
What are you wearing?
I’m wearing some Acne trousers, a black tee I got from a work project (text conveniently obscured) with a Line by K vest over the top. My shoes are Salomons that I mostly bought for the colour because I like that they sort of match the red in my hair. I always consider my hair to be part of my outfit, and I’ve been enjoying doing these sort of constructed plaits to put off wash day.
Jewellery is a mix of some Maria Black, Missoma and the necklace charms are from one of my Granny’s and a Great Aunt on each side of my family. My glasses are from a shop called Specstacular.
Why did you choose this outfit?
It feels like an accurate picture of how I dress day-to-day. My wardrobe is mainly black, brown and navy so a lot of the time I’m looking for variation through texture or silhouette.
I’ve just had these trousers hemmed after putting it off for far too long so it feels like I’ve got a brand new pair. Top-wise I wanted to see if this layering would work in real life like it did in my head.
Where did you wear it?
I wore it into the office and then out for a cocktail with a friend at 392 Kingsland Rd.
What’s the best style lesson you’ve learnt over the years?
A while ago, I realised I got most excited to get dressed when I was on holiday, and it was because my clothing options were condensed down to only my favourite things. I decided to treat my entire wardrobe as if it were only my “best,” and now anything new I buy has to fit this brief.
One person you think has great style?

My friend and artist J. I love seeing how their work carries across all of the different mediums that they explore.
One recommendation to read / watch / listen see or do?
Read - Black Women Writers at Work, edited by Claudia Tate. An incredible collection of interviews. It was originally published in 1983 and is a really wonderful snapshot of each of the writers at the time, and I love the challenging moments in some of the conversations.
