Ever heard that soul-destroying productivity mantra, ‘You have the same number of hours in a day as Beyoncé’? I felt a bit like that reading Grace’s response. Any woman who manages to run a jewellery brand, an earplugs company, write a newsletter, and dress in head-to-toe Yohji is worthy of our admiration. So here’s Grace Ko:
Who are you?
I’m Grace Ko, an entrepreneur based in London, best known for my jewellery brand, Baobei 宝贝, and my hearing protection company, Sets. As a multi-disciplinary artist, my practice has included fashion design, modelling, writing a substack, painting, dancing, and hosting community events.
What are you wearing?
Yohji Yamamoto skirt, cardigan and belt. Uma Wang flats, Closet Children necklace, and a handmade mesh bandeau, made for a Baobei Label shoot
Why did you choose this outfit?
I simply love Yohji Yamamoto and embodying the design ethos of dark romanticism and Asian culture. He’s used women as his main inspiration, and rightfully so. In particular, he's mentioned that his designs work to protect the female form and not sexualise it - love that.
Where did you wear it/ where are you planning to wear it?
I’m wearing it while I clear out my wardrobe! This outfit feels like present-day me, and since I have attachment issues with my clothes, wearing something that represents me now makes it easier to identify clothes that aren’t aligned with me anymore. Wearing something that you love while you do a wardrobe clear out sets the standard of how you dress and makes letting go of old clothes easier.
What’s the best style lesson you’ve learned over the years?
Experiment and never play it safe - there’s a lot more to learn about yourself and the world when you dress playfully.
One person you think has great style?
Best life hack?
If you knew too much, then you wouldn’t do it. Let curiosity and what you don’t know be your biggest strength.
Your favourite person to follow?
One recommendation to read/ watch/ listen/ see or do?
I write a Substack called 0800PresentLife. I think of it as small reads for a big life, it’s all the business, relationship, holistic life learnings that I feel obliged to share with my community and to bookmark for my future self. Also Wong Kar-Wai's ‘In the Mood to Love’ is a pillar of cinema for me. And of course, the Daniels’ ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’. And honourable mention, ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’.
