I met Phil in Santa Fe, when we were both invited there on a trip with adidas. He came with me to the Georgia O’Keeffe museum where I spent a while nerding out about her clothes. Phil is an NYC-based streetwear designer who works under the moniker PHILLLLLTHY, where he transforms vintage and distressed garments into bold, one-of-a-kind pieces. He also makes cars look like this.
Who are you?
My name is Phillip Leyesa! A swagapino living in New York, lol.
What are you wearing?
On my head sits my favorite beanie from Adidem Asterisks*. Keeping my body warm is a simple white Hanes wife pleaser (we don’t say wife beater anymore), a white PHILLLLLTHY Blank Tee and on top of that is a Filipino adidas track jacket. Below that, I’m wearing adidas windbreaker pants that I found on eBay for dirt cheap. The shoes are also adidas and the silhouette is called ‘Orketro.’ On my hands, I’m wearing PHILLLLLTHY Everyday Gloves in yellow.
Why did you chose this outfit?
I love wearing blue, and this track jacket is my favorite. I gotta rep the Philippines! I remember being a young lad and seeing this track jacket for the first time but I couldn’t afford it. Now that I’m older with some pocket change, you best believe I bought one and imma wear the hell out of this thing. Also, being cozy is my main priority and this outfit is definitely that. Wearing bright colors gives me a confidence boost when I need it.
Where did you wear it?
I wore it to get coffee with a friend, and to do some location scouting for a marketing video I have coming up.
Whats the best style lesson you’ve learned over the years?
I think having a uniform is important for someone's identity and personal style. It’s also great for the days when you don’t feel like putting on a fit or you’re just feeling lazy. My go-to uniform is a blank white tee, double knee carpenter pants, a Yankee fitted and some sort of sneaker or boot.
Best life hack?
Drink water, lots of it. It’s not really a hack, but people be so busy during the day that they forget to stay hydrated. (I used to be that person.)
Your favourite person to follow?
Not really a person but the We The Urban page is my favorite. Ain’t nothing better than reading some daily affirmations to get your soul feeling A1.
One recommendation to read/ watch/ listen/ see or do?
Recently, I watched The World’s Fastest Indian on Netflix. Oh my days, I loved that movie so much. It’s about an old dude living his dream of riding his custom built motorcycle on the Salt Flats in Utah, and all the obstacles he had to go through to reach his goal. I may or may not have cried during the movie…
