3 Minute Thread: Song-I Saba
"Just wear the special thing. To the supermarket, to the cinema, wherever."
I met Song-I last year at a beautiful supper club hosted by Soft Studies (a food studio run by culinary artist Nil Mutluer and her partner John Chen). Song-I was seated next to me, and she told me that she runs a tinned fish brand with her father. How impossibly heartwarming (and chic), I thought. I think her 3 Minute Thread is giving mermaid-on-land.
Who are you?
My name is Song-I Saba. I’m a London-based fashion copywriter, and I run a tinned fish brand called PYSCIS with my dad.
What are you wearing?
The top and skirt set are from 100% SILK in Toronto. They’re printed with a sort of “image diary”; it’s subtle, but the closer you look, the more you see. The sandals are old Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière, a hand-me-down from my mum that I’ve worn for the past ten years. And the beach bag is from Laos, handwoven from vines. I always take it on holiday. The butterfly hair clip is from a NY-based company called Solar Eclipse.
Why did you choose this outfit?
I’m currently in Portugal, and I feel like a beach vacation is always a great opportunity to have more fun with dressing casually, some playful knits in the evening that can be thrown on over a bathing suit.
Where did you wear it?
I wore this after a long day spent on the beach, about to cook a big pot of spaghetti with my friends on our last day before returning to London.
What’s the best style lesson you’ve learned over the years?
Just wear the special thing. To the supermarket, to the cinema, wherever. Life’s too short to save good clothes for some imagined future occasion.
One person you think has great style?
Robin Williams. You could tell he had fun with it. It was unpretentious, playful, a little bonkers. He wore Jean Paul Gaultier body prints, Issey Miyake, Walter van Beirendonck… I love when you can tell someone gets a genuine kick out of fashion and doesn’t take themselves too seriously.
Best life hack?
The Too Good To Go app. It connects users with local spots that have surplus food at the end of the day. I live in London Fields, and a lot of great restaurants and stores are on there.
Your favourite person to follow?
My boyfriend, the artist Hamish Pearch.
